I liked the organization and especially the guides Maira and Marta! They are excellent people who helped me a lot to find a group where I could understand the language better! One point for improvement is to make it more visible on the ticket that the tour is run by Buendia, because I got lost at the meeting waiting for people from Headout! Maira was sensational in explaining the history of the place and was also concerned about our safety during the tour! Buying the tour from Headout was easy and practical!

We had an excellent day trip! Everything was very well organized, and the experience exceeded our expectations. Our tour guide was truly outstanding—knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate. Unfortunately, I don’t remember his name, but he had blue eyes and short, darkish hair. He made the day not only informative but also really enjoyable. The places we visited were absolutely incredible, and thanks to his recommendations, we were able to discover some hidden gems we wouldn’t have found on our own. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a memorable and enriching experience.

There was no indication of the final march to the Pena castle. Way too far & steep to walk for seniors. It would have been good to know how far & steep that final climb was going to be round trip. Guide was very good but focused on the front of the bus. We ended up sitting near the back & 2 women continually talked the whole time. It was difficult to hear the guide.

The tour came as advertised. It was well organized, people assembled at the location and were divided into groups by language. The tour guide gave out information at both sites ( could have added more while we were driving to the site). We had 90 minutes on our own at lunch time, which was good.

Andrea was a great guide! She gave great information with a good mix of free time. We enjoyed our day with her and were super happy that of the two groups our bus was divided into, we were in Andrea's group! Just a heads up for future travellers, the Pena Palace is an extra 10 euros that is not included in your tour price.

Quinta da Regaleira is beautiful, mysterious and a little eerie. With underground tunnels, a Gothic-style palace, a chapel, and gardens full of symbolism, it feels like something out of a fantasy film. Was it all coded messaging from a secret society, or just a rich man’s imagination? The only way to find out is to visit it and there’s no easier way than on a guided tour from Lisbon. This guide will show you how to plan your trip to uncover the secrets of this UNESCO-listed estate.

Why visit Quinta da Regaleira?

It’s more than just a palace

Quinta da Regaleira was built by António Carvalho Monteiro, a wealthy Portuguese nobleman and Freemason. Designed by Italian architect Luigi Manini, the estate weaves together Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance styles with esoteric symbolism. You'll find references to the Knights Templar, alchemy, and ancient mythology carved into arches, hidden in garden structures, and embedded in the Initiation Well’s spiral descent.

The gardens are an adventure

The estate’s gardens are like a living puzzle. You’ll navigate shaded footpaths through dense greenery, duck into mossy grottoes, and discover secret passageways connecting hidden towers and artificial lakes.

It’s easy to reach from Lisbon

Just 40 minutes by train from Lisbon brings you to Sintra, and Bus 435 takes you straight to the gates of Quinta da Regaleira. There are no confusing detours, instead just a direct, scenic route to one of Sintra’s most enchanting estates.

Perfect pairing with other attractions in Sintra

Quinta da Regaleira is close to the Sintra town center, making it easy to combine with the National Palace, Moorish Castle, or even a stroll through Sintra’s cobbled lanes and cafés.

A photographer’s dream

From the mossy spiral of the Initiation Well to the Neo-Gothic palace façade and romantic stone arches, every turn here offers a frame-worthy moment.

Highlights of Quinta da Regaleira: What not to miss

The Initiation Well

This iconic spiral staircase descending deep into the ground is both eerie and beautiful. Said to symbolize a journey into the underworld, it’s the most photographed and mysterious part of the estate. Walk the mossy spiral and exit through a hidden tunnel beneath the gardens.

The Palace (Palácio da Regaleira)

An ornate, neo-Manueline mansion with Gothic towers, carved stonework, and extravagant interiors. Explore the chapel, balconies, and intricate detailing that reflects Portugal’s romantic and spiritual influences.

Underground Tunnels

A maze of underground tunnels links the estate’s most iconic spots like the spiraling Initiation Well, the hidden waterfall at Lake of the Waterfall, and the myth-inspired Leda’s Grotto. Walking these dimly lit passageways feels like stepping into a real-life fairytale or secret society ritual.

Regaleira Chapel

Located just beside the main house, this small but stunning chapel features stained glass, religious iconography, and esoteric symbolism. It’s part spiritual site, part artistic showcase.

The gardens & grottoes

Designed as a symbolic journey, the garden is filled with lakes, grottoes, towers, and pathways that blur the line between nature and architecture. Don't miss stepping stones across the lake or the hidden benches under ivy-draped pergolas.

How to get from Lisbon to Quinta da Regaleira

Getting to Quinta da Regaleira is a two-part journey: first, travel from Lisbon to Sintra; then make your way to the estate using Bus 435, a short taxi ride, or on foot. Here’s a look at your options:

By train
By car
By bus
By guided tour
  • Best for most travelers.
  • Take the direct train from Lisbon’s Rossio Station to Sintra Station. The ride takes about 40 minutes, with trains departing every 20–30 minutes.
  • Once in Sintra, hop on Bus 435. It loops past the town center and drops you right near the gates of Quinta da Regaleira. Alternatively, you can walk (~15 minutes downhill) or take a short Uber.
  • Good for flexibility, but parking is a hassle.
  • Drive from Lisbon to Sintra via the A37/IC19, a trip of around 30 minutes.
  • From there, navigate the winding roads to the historic center. Know that parking is limited, especially near Quinta da Regaleira. Your best bet is to park in one of the designated lots in town (P1 or P2) and walk or take Bus 435.
  • Not ideal if you are visiting on weekends due to congestion.
  • Slower, less direct.
  • You can take the Scotturb 417 bus from Sete Rios Station in Lisbon to Sintra in about 50–60 minutes.
  • From Sintra, you’ll still need to board Bus 435 or walk to the estate.
  • This option is slower and less frequent than the train, and subject to traffic but works if you're staying near Sete Rios or you find the bus more convenient than a train.
  • Best for ease, speed, and sightseeing. Many guided day tours from Lisbon include round-trip AC coach transfers, entry to Quinta da Regaleira, and stops at nearby highlights like Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, or Cabo da Roca.
  • You skip the lines, avoid public transport, and get historical context from expert guides.
  • Highly recommended if you want a seamless experience with multiple stops in Sintra.

Taking the 435 tourist bus to Quinta da Regaleira

Once you arrive at Sintra Station, the easiest way to reach Quinta da Regaleira is via Bus 435. This hop-on-hop-off style tourist bus connects key attractions around the town center, including the National Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, and Seteais Palace.

Route & stops

The 435 bus departs from Sintra Station, passes through the historic town center, and continues on a loop that includes:

  • Sintra National Palace
  • Quinta da Regaleira
  • Palácio de Seteais

It’s a one-way circular route that runs counter-clockwise from the station.

Timings & frequency

  • Runs every 15 minutes
  • First departure: 9:15am
  • Last departure: 7:50pm (summer) / 6:20pm (winter)
  • Travel time to Quinta da Regaleira: ~10 minutes from Sintra Station

Where to board & get down

  • Boarding: Right outside Sintra Station at the marked Bus 435 stop
  • Get down: At the Quinta da Regaleira stop, located just a short walk from the estate’s entrance

Getting back from Quinta da Regaleira

To return, simply re-board the 435 bus at the same stop. The loop continues back toward Sintra town and returns to Sintra Station. As with all tourist buses in Sintra, aim to head back at least 30–40 minutes before the final departure, especially in winter, to avoid missing the last ride.

At the time of arrival, we were able to enter with our tickets with ease. We showed up 45 minutes early so we had to wait in a lineup of others who were also early. They control the amount if traffic entering in this way which was appreciated because it was very very busy. The gardens and the palace themselves are stunning. We waited about 30 minutes in line to see the initiation well, but it was so worth it. We both really enjoyed learning about the property and the man who built it via the interactive video and historical timelines that they have on display in one of the buildings

The Quinta da Regaleira was the best sight we visited in Sinatra. Much better than the Pena Palace and much easier to get to, just a 10 minute walk from the center. Can easily spend 2 hours walking the grounds so if you you only have time for one do this one.

Two very complete tours with an audio description in Brazilian Portuguese, which is very helpful. The stops are at strategic locations near points of interest and the frequency of the buses is good. I didn't catch any crowded buses or have to wait long. I also used the streetcars for free during the validity period of the ticket and visited other places such as the São Jorge Castle on top of the hill.
